Standing in the Gap

Most of us take things for granted in life, but I often see what Hope4Healing does as standing in the gap for those we serve.  Barb, our database administrator, shares a story below about how we stood in the gap for a family when others did not.

I was at a church meeting recently where we were discussing how we were raising funds for a project to help people.  What struck me about the conversation was how quickly we assumed money and stuff was what we needed to offer to help others.  In reality what people may need from us may be quite different.  Sometimes what others need doesn’t involve monetary or material donations.  They need our time, concern, skills, or our access to information which they lack.

One of the extra services Hope4Healing offers is a VITA site, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance.  This is a free tax preparation site sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).  We train volunteers to prepare taxes. They must pass an IRS test to be certified preparers.

This past spring we were preparing a tax return for a family with several children.  Although we prepared the taxes correctly, they were not receiving the Earned Income Tax Credit.  We did not file the taxes but took the extra time to do some research and ask questions of our more experienced tax preparers.  The employer had put the wages in the wrong box on the tax form.  With a corrected, reissued form the family was entitled to a $6000 refund.  This was a huge boost to their income.

One of the purposes of our VITA site is to keep things fair.  We won’t file a return if we feel the information provided is incorrect but we also try to make sure taxpayers receive every benefit they are entitled to.

If you would like to find out more about our VITA tax site, please contact us at (855)584-HOPE (4673) or email us at Info@hope4healingquakerdale.net, or click the donation link below.

Thank you,
