Baking up something good for others!!!

Hello!  My name is Lauren, and I am involved in 4-H.  This 4-H year was hard with so many cancellations including the county fair and the state fair; but the cancellations got me thinking.  I know that with COVID-19, recent storms, and other issues affecting “…my club, my community, my country, and my world…” people are hurting and need help.  I also know that I cannot help everyone; but if 4-H has taught me anything, it is that each of us can do our part, each of us can set a goal, each of us can do something, and we “learn by doing.”  So, I am planning for next year already; and I had the idea of a community/leadership project that allows me to accomplish two goals at once.  This project will allow me to help others by supporting a non-profit organization I volunteer for called Hope4Healing (, and help me develop skills which will help me complete my project.

Well, are you curious yet about my idea for my project?  My idea is to use my skills as a baker to help raise money to support Hope4Healing’s annual budget.  You see, every year I submit several food and nutrition entries at the county fair, and I do pretty well with the judges.  In fact many of my entries have been considered for the Iowa State Fair and some of them have even gone to the Iowa State Fair.  You might have even seen them in the 4-H building if you have gone to the Iowa State Fair!  So, since I enjoy baking, and I know people like to eat!  Why not combine those two passions to bring a smile to your face and to the face of those who are going through a hard time.  Over the next few months, I will share each week the types of goodies and their prices that will be available for you to order.  Every dollar I raise, I will donate to Hope4Healing.  When you order, I will let you know when it will be ready and work out the details for you to pick it up; so keep checking back for further details.  I will have pies, cakes, breads, sweet breads, jams, cookies, butter braids, and other sweet treats for you to order.  I am asking for your help in reaching my goal of at least $100.00 a week through the end of the year.  Would you enjoy a homemade sweet treat that provides help to a family or individual going through a tough time?

To place an order you can use one of three options:

This week’s specials are:

Apple or Peach Pie  $10.00/each (9″ pie pan)

Loaf of White or Whole Wheat Bread  $6.00/loaf

Banana Bread  $6.00/loaf

Snickerdoodle or Chocolate Chip cookies  $5.00/dozen

½ Pint of Sweet Cherry Jam  $5.00/jar

Buttermilk Brownies  $8.00/pan (9″x 13″)

Carrot Cake  $8.00/pan (9″x 13″)

Don’t forget to check every Monday on the Hope4Healing Facebook page at for new additions and seasonal and holiday favorites!

P.S. All options can be made with a lower sugar option like Truvia for a $1.00 extra per item.  Breads, brownies, and cakes can be made with Whole Wheat Flour instead of White All Purpose Flour for an additional $0.50 per item.  If you have a favorite baked good that is not on the list, please let me know, and I will tell you if I can make it or if it is on the list for an upcoming addition.

I realize some people might not want to purchase an item, but would be willing to help me reach my goal; if you would like to make a monetary donation toward my goal, I want you to know I very much appreciate your help!

Thank you for taking the time to read my post, and for helping me both with my project and to help others!

Sincerely, Lauren.
