Family and the Sweetness of Fall

This time of year reminds me of getting together with family; and when family gets together, there is always memories of mom, grandma, and extended family baking and cooking wonderful food.  It is always interesting how food tends to bring people together.  I hope that the “sweet treats” I have been baking is helping to bring families closer together.  It has been hard this year when we have been asked to social distance; but family always seems to find a way.

Did you know that in supporting Hope4Healing, you are also helping families?  I was told that in 2019 Hope4Healing helped with over 4,000 request across the state of Iowa, and that most of the request that come in impact families.  Sometimes it is the simple things in life that separate us; food, shelter, and clothing.  Hope4Healing helps bring families together as well by helping to find the things that are causing families to struggle.  I can’t imagine enjoying this time of year without family, and am thankful that in some small way I can help bring other families together as well.

“Always Act In A Way To Do Good”

By Melissa Keller

After several months of closure due to Covid-19 restrictions, I was excited that one of favorite Chinese Restaurants had finally opened its doors again.  As we were preparing to leave the restaurant, the waiter brought our fortune cookies to the table, and as I opened my cookie, I smiled as I read the words “Act Always in a way to do Good”.

Baking up something good for others!!!

Hello!  My name is Lauren, and I am involved in 4-H.  This 4-H year was hard with so many cancellations including the county fair and the state fair; but the cancellations got me thinking.  I know that with COVID-19, recent storms, and other issues affecting “…my club, my community, my country, and my world…” people are hurting and need help.  I also know that I cannot help everyone; but if 4-H has taught me anything, it is that each of us can do our part, each of us can set a goal, each of us can do something, and we “learn by doing.”  So, I am planning for next year already; and I had the idea of a community/leadership project that allows me to accomplish two goals at once.  This project will allow me to help others by supporting a non-profit organization I volunteer for called Hope4Healing (https://hope4healingquakerdale.net/), and help me develop skills which will help me complete my project.

Stronger Than The Storm Camps

In addition to our Resource Assistance Network, Hope4Healing has been busy facilitating a community effort to help the youth of Marshalltown, Iowa recover emotionally from the aftermath of the July 2018 tornado. Since the tornado,  thunderstorms and loud noises are just a few things that often cause anxiety and nightmares for local youth, and sleepless nights for parents.  The “Stronger Than The Storm camps” were developed by Hope4Healing to help youth overcome these emotional obstacles, and gain concrete supports needed for the future.

Standing in the Gap

Most of us take things for granted in life, but I often see what Hope4Healing does as standing in the gap for those we serve.  Barb, our database administrator, shares a story below about how we stood in the gap for a family when others did not.

I was at a church meeting recently where we were discussing how we were raising funds for a project to help people.  What struck me about the conversation was how quickly we assumed money and stuff was what we needed to offer to help others.  In reality what people may need from us may be quite different.  Sometimes what others need doesn’t involve monetary or material donations.  They need our time, concern, skills, or our access to information which they lack.   Continue reading “Standing in the Gap”

This article is “Jarring”! Can you help?

2020 has had many challenges; and challenges are sometimes opportunities to learn old things for the first time.  In another article in this newsletter, you can read about how my daughter has been learning about making jam and other types of canning; and how Hope4Healing is looking to use the principle of preservation to help us do fundraising in a new way.

Letter from the Director: July 2020 Signal Beacon

As with many of us, Hope4Healing has been busy behind the scenes throughout the months since COVID-19 changed how we interact socially and help those around us.  One of the changes starts with this newsletter; did you notice?  Our newsletter now has a new name which reflects our imagery as lighthouse projecting a light of Hope and Healing.  We played around with a lot of names for newsletters, but struggled to find one that seemed to fit; they either sounded like a name of a soap opera or were to “corny.”  We finally landed on the Hope4Healing Signal Beacon Newsletter, or the Signal Beacon for short.  As a marriage and family therapist, I (Ryan) have seen how these times of uncertainty, fear, and decreased social activity have increased anxiety, depression, and many speak of not knowing what to do or which way to go; so, the name “Signal Beacon” seems appropriate as we hope to provide light and hope as we all traverse the path forward together.
